Next Level: NV1 and NV2 Clearances

To be considered for a Government or Defence role, candidates are often required to hold a security clearance, with the relevant level depending on the sensitivity of the role. This Apto Resources blog will focus on two clearance types we offer: Negative Vetting Level 1 and Negative Vetting Level 2. What is Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1)?

NV1 clearance holders are able to access classified resources up to and including Secret. Candidates can be temporarily provided access to Top Secret classified resources in certain circumstances.

What is Negative Vetting Level 2 (NV2)?

NV2 clearance holders are able to access classified resources up to and including Top Secret. Often this is the highest clearance level required for most roles.

Do you have to begin at Baseline and work your way up?

Not at all, you simply apply for the clearance that you need. For example, if a job requires you to obtain an NV2, you apply for an NV2 clearance process.

Can you be sponsored for an NV1 or NV2 without having any clearances prior?

Yes! No prior sponsorship (for example, Baseline) is required.

I have a baseline already, is there any way to progress to NV1?

Unfortunately, there is no progression, per se. You would need to begin each clearance application from scratch. For example, if a role requires an NV1 clearance and you are a Baseline clearance holder, you would still be required to apply for NV1 in its entirety. This includes the relevant fees and vetting processes, which will be more in-depth for a clearance of this nature. The same concept applies for candidates wishing to obtain an NV2 clearance – you will need to apply independently for a higher clearance regardless of whether you already hold NV1 or Baseline.
