Maintaining your Security Clearance
Whether you are entering a Government or defence role, a security clearance listed on your CV will ensure you are a standout candidate. As explained in our introductory blog, Baseline Security Clearances: The Basics, it is an accreditation that takes time and commitment to achieve. And it’s certainly not worth losing! This latest Apto Resources blog will delve into the steps you can take to maintain your most important qualification, and continue unlocking new opportunities.
What are my responsibilities?
Security clearance holders are expected to maintain behaviours that ‘the general public would reasonably expect of someone who holds a position of public trust.’ These behaviours include:
· Not consuming large amounts of alcohol or non-prescribed prescription or illegal recreational drugs.
· Conducting yourself with honesty and integrity, and living your life in a lawful manner.
· Following requirements detailed in your security clearance application, including reviews and compulsory training.
· Reporting suspicious behaviour from other work colleagues or peers to AGSVA or your security clearance sponsor.
· Not taking advantage of your access, role or authority to seek a benefit or avoid a penalty or liability.
You will also need to inform AGSVA and your sponsor of the following changes to your circumstances:
· Change in relationship status
· Criminal charges, warnings or convictions
· Changes to your financial circumstances
· Incidents that might impact your personal life or physical wellbeing
· Contact with foreign nationals if appropriate
· Contact with foreign intelligence officials
· Membership of associations
· Change in religion or political beliefs, particularly if they require active support or participation in a political cause
You can read the full list of responsibilities and obligations from AGSVA here.
Failing to keep authorities informed of changes to your circumstances is perhaps the easiest way to lose a security clearance. Sponsors will only be able to assist with the information they are provided. Ensure AGSVA also has access to your most up-to-date contact details should they need to contact you for any reason. If you are unable to be reached, it could potentially result in your clearance being revoked as well!
When do I renew my clearance?
Your security clearance will be reviewed at regular intervals, known as a periodic revalidation. Generally speaking, a baseline security clearance will be reviewed every 15 years, NV1 every 10 years, with NV2 and Positive Vetting every 7 years. You will receive communications from AGSVA when your periodic revalidation date approaches, and it will be your responsibility to contact your sponsor to confirm your clearance is still required.
A security clearance is an important accreditation, and therefore comes with a lot of responsibility surrounding its maintenance. As an organisation specialising in sponsorship, Apto Resources streamlines this process and help our candidates stay on top of their obligations. Interested in a Government or defence role?
