Baseline Security Clearance: The Basics

To be considered for a Government or defence role, candidates are often required to hold a security clearance, with Baseline as the first level. A Baseline Security Clearance will generally allow individuals to access classified information that is regarded as Protected. In this Apto Resources blog, we unpack the basics of obtaining this qualification, and what jobseekers can expect to achieve.

Why do I need a Baseline Security Clearance?

Working within the defence industry can be a valuable and rewarding experience, with plenty of opportunity to advance and grow a career. As a result, personnel within this category are often trusted with sensitive and classified information restricted from the general public. Under the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), employees occupying these positions have been appropriately vetted to possess a range of character traits including: honesty, trustworthiness, maturity, tolerance, resilience and loyalty. It’s more than a traditional job interview, and Apto Resources is proud to be an industry partner helping Australians develop the skills and confidence to seek out these roles and opportunities.

What is my first step?

Candidates are required to seek an organisation, agency or program that is able to sponsor their security clearance. This is where Apto Resources comes in. We are better known as a Defence Industry Security Program (DISP), offering an accessible pathway to opportunities in defence. We welcome jobseekers looking to begin or transition their career, providing paid employment and training that propels them into the workforce with confidence. Not only will they receive the appropriate security clearance, they will flourish in a supportive and resourceful community that is led by senior knowledge.

I have found a sponsor, now what?

As we described above, the information you interact with holds great value and importance. Once you’ve completed your training, you undergo a vetting process with the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA). This process is extensive, but will determine your suitability in holding a clearance, and will vary depending on the level of security you are wanting to access.

For a Baseline Security Clearance, you may be required to disclose information regarding:

·         Previous employment with related agencies and other employers

·         Verification of your residential address

·         Verification of personal documents such as birth, marriage and change of name certificates

·         Verification of citizenship documents such as the Australian Passports Office

·         Education history

·         Criminal history

·         Corroboration of international travel with the Department of Home Affairs’ records

·         Digital footprint check such as electronic transactions

·         Verification of financial circumstances

·         Verification of medical status

How long does my clearance last?

It’s a long process, so it’s imperative you don’t lose your clearance! A Baseline Security Clearance generally lasts 15 years. AGSVA will alert you when your periodic revalidation date is approaching, and you will need to contact your security advisor to confirm your clearance is still required. During this time you also hold responsibilities in maintaining public trust and acting in a lawful and diligent manner. You will also need to inform AGSVA of any changes to your personal details or circumstances. This resource from AGSVA outlines the full list of responsibilities required of security clearance holders.

Apto Resources is the first and final step towards achieving the appropriate clearance and entering your next role with confidence.
